There exist a fair number of environmental NGOs in Peninsular Malaysia as well as in Sabah and Sarawak. The objectives and aims of NGOs in the Peninsular may differ from that of East Malaysia, in that the MENGOs in Sabah and Sarawak are more community focussed as compared to NGOs in Peninsular Malaysia that are more focussed on natural resources conservation and quality of life issues.

In East Malaysia, efforts of environmental NGOs are geared towards the preservation of the environment and the natural forests. The needs of the indigenous people as well as the preservation of their culture and way of life seems to be one of the top priorities of the local NGOs.
