MENGO Digest
Hi all, it's JJ and I am working with MENGO once again for the next couple of months. I have been asked to continue the MENGO monthly digest by Dr Sundari, so I am sure that's good news to all my fans out there (if any). This edition of the MENGO monthly digest will include all major events from 1 September - 31 December 2009.
September 2009
Meeting with YB Edward Lee (16th Sept)
Incidentally also International Ozone Day / World Cleanup Day, MENGO had a meeting with YAB Edward Lee, the Bukit Gasing State Assembly Member, to discuss environmental issues and collaborative initiatives with MENGO.
October 2009
3rd Dialogue on Trans-boundary Haze by ISIS (5 Oct)
Most of us shudder at the thought of breathing in a mix of toxic chemicals and soot, often blaming our neighbours for this phenomenon known as haze. Co-organised by ISIS (Institute of Strategic and International Studies) Malaysia and SIIA (Singapore Institute of International Affairs), the dialogue included an assessment of the 2002 ASEAN Trans-boundary Haze Pollution Agreement, and an analysis of Haze as a global issue.
Conference on Nuclear Energy (10 Oct)
The conference on Nuclear Energy held at Hotel Armada P.J., sought to analyse the question of whether or not Malaysia needs Nuclear Energy. Co-organised by CETDEM and the Physicians for Peace and Social Responsibility, the conference addressed the issues related to the controversial energy source, including disposal of exhausted nuclear waste, health impacts and economic feasibility.
2nd National Conference on Extreme Weather and Climate Change (14-15 Oct)
This conference covered topics related to climate change in Malaysia, such as vulnerability and adaptation, impacts of climate change on agriculture and the appropriate policy responses.
November 2009
6th National Utilities Summit 2009 by ASLI (12 Nov)
Organised by ASLI (Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute), the summit included talks concerning sustainable water management, energy efficiency and even potential opportunities for green energy in Malaysia. The session also included a discussion forum on consumer and user perspectives.
Sustainable Energy Conference by CETDEM (5 Nov)
The sustainable energy conference covered topics from the recently developed Malaysian Green Technology Policy, Green Technology in the transport sector, Energy Efficiency, Use of Biomass from the Oil Palm Sector, Harnessing energy from the Oceans and Photovoltaic Cell technology. There was a forum discussion and paper presentations from various speakers. The telecommunication sector was also invited to share their view point on green technology advancement.
Biodiversity Road Show at Kota Kinabalu (17 Nov)
The MENGO Support Unit continued with the second road show on the Biodiversity Component. The first event was held in Johor Bahru (22 October) - Biodiversity Dissemination and Sharing workshop co-organised by NRE and MENGO and this time it was held in Sabah to cater for participants from East Malaysia states. The reception at the event was extremely positive, with the majority of the 70 participants going away from the workshop with many tools, applications and publications developed during the immunisation of the Biodiversity Component funded by DANIDA. Most of the participants found the seminar an excellent and worthwhile experience. The MSU felt that this was the most successful of the 3 road shows so far organised in 2009.

The 19th of November was an important day for the MSU and for also some of the MCC members, who sat through two back to back to attend PSC and MCC meetings. With a lot of things to get through, and over six hours of sitting at a meeting, interrupted by a nice vegetarian lunch in the middle, it is safe to say, that these were one of the smoother MCC and PSC meetings yet.

Seminar/Workshop on Mainstreaming Biodiversity organised by NRE, WWF and MENGO (23-24 Nov)
Mr Awang and I attended the 2 day seminar/workshop on mainstreaming biodiversity, held at the Equatorial Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. The Biodiversity road show team were part of the main speakers, and gave presentations to around 50 participants from the government, corporate and private sectors. The presentations were followed by some intense arguments and debates, especially regarding the issue of the clearing of rainforests to make way for palm oil plantations, incurring a loss in biodiversity.

December 2009
December, being a month of festivities, with 3 out of the 5 weeks having Friday as a public holiday. Despite this, the MSU still had a full board of things to do.

Biodiversity Road Show, Penang (7 December)
The MSU team arrived on the 6th in George Town, Penang to set up the seminar room and left on the morning of the 8th. All the presentations went off without a hitch, and the first part of the event had almost 60 participants. The second part of the workshop in the afternoon involved a dissemination of the publications of NRE including MENGO and the Five Focus Groups. Lots of publications and posters were handed out (Mr Awang had drilled the need to bring cloth bags into most of the participants), and many an elderly woman needed my help in carrying them to her car. Other highlights included a small exhibition by the Semai, Indigenous Peoples, who showcased some of their traditional herbal medicines, weaving work and rattan work.
