Objectives

  • Promote awareness of the need to conserve marine resources and prevent unnecessary deterioration of quality of the marine environment.

  • Offer recommendations for the conservation of the marine environment and to encourage establishments of Marine Reserves or Marine Parks.

  • Be available to advise government bodies in Malaysia on matters related to the marine sciences and the rational exploitation of marine resources.

  • Foster interest among the general public on marine science issues.

  • Organise regular scientific meetings or seminars at local and national level.

  • Help establish and maintain contacts with organisations, institutions and scientists interested in marine sciences at national level.

  • Procure and provide information concerning marine science; and OE Produce regular publications on marine science.

Core Activities

The major activities of Malaysian Society of Marine Sciences are:

  • Publication of bi-monthly newsletter, Oceanews.

  • Publication of scientific papers presented during annual conferences of marine science..

  • Annual conferences on marine sciences.

  • Regular indoor meets - to foster interaction among members and to host talks to stimulate.

  • Outdoor meets for members to enjot and appreciate the marine ecosystem.

  • Coral Reef Support Team (CREST) which conducts reef checks and diving lessons for children.

  • Regular research expeditions.
