SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME
  SDP

Are you interested in the Sustainable Development Programme offered by MENGO?

This is a programme with a duration of 6 to 8 months working with members of MENGO’s (the civil society network of 20 environmental NGOs in Malaysia) sustainable development programme. The programme consist of frequent talks on issues on various contemporary aspects of the environment, such as rainwater harvesting, zero plastic bag usage, energy efficient buildings, biodiversity, and the vulnerable/extinct species of Malaysia.

There are also demos on certain aspects of the sustainable living concepts, such as the concept of ecological footprints and how you can reduce it, mangrove replanting and their importance to the local people and the environment, organic farming and the sustainable benefits of composting.

We also conduct regular visits to nature reserves such as the indigenous people’s village of Ulu Geroh, near Gopeng, Perak, to witness and discuss the sounds, sights and emotions of the Orang Asli of the region the Semai, visit the rare rafflesia found only in the area and Malaysia’s national butterfly, the Rajah Brooke’s Birdwing.

Other site visits include the Kuala Gula Wetlands to learn about the importance of mangrove ecosystems to the environment and the economy, Tasek Bera where you will get to interact with the local Semelai Indigenous people and learn about the importance of wetlands to the environment, and also the Kuala Selangor Nature Park, which houses various natural attractions such as saltwater marshes and the famed “kelip-kelip” or fireflies in the region.

If you are interested in the programme, please contact Mr Awang Muzzaidin, the Assistant Coordinator of the MENGO Support Unit (MSU) at: awang@mengo.org
